"Phantom of the Opera" Announces Worldwide Opening Dates

Thursday, November 25, 2004

USA Today Reivew of Phantom -- The Phantom of the Opera (* ½) He's ba-ack — composer Andrew Lloyd Webber, that is, whose musical-theater oeuvre has once again been adapted for the big screen. Unlike the Madonna vehicle Evita, this Phantom doesn't boast any celebrated pop singers — or any singers worth celebrating, for that matter, other than Broadway transplant Patrick Wilson in the supporting role of Raoul. And even he is constrained by Webber's cheesy, repetitive score, which suggests a cross between Puccini and the schlock-rock band Queen, only without the genius of the former or the cheeky invention of the latter. Millions of theatergoers can be wrong, believe me. —Gardner
